Programs and services for early childhood

Daycare services are available throughout the province. It has been proved that learning begins with exploration, discovery and play. For over 10 years, all French-language schools have been offering full-time junior and senior kindergarten programs to children ages 4 and 5. These programs offer:

• Learning centres;
• Play groups;
• French-language junior kindergarten programs within schools for 3-year old children;
• Programs designed to improve children’s proficiency in French;
• Elementary school or kindergarten preparation programs.

Some schools even offer programs to children starting at age 3. All of these extracurricular daycare services are provided to meet the needs of parents before and after school hours and during school holidays. These services are rapidly growing. Recently, 26 new daycare services have been implemented within French-language school boards; these will provide approximately 700 new child care spaces for children ages 2.5 to 3.8. FLE has an ambitious agenda to rapidly increase early childhood programs and the services offered within its schools.

These programs are beneficial to children’s academic performance and their personal, social and intellectual development.

Full-time junior and senior kindergarten programs

For over 10 years, French-language school boards have been offering full-time junior and senior kindergarten programs in various formats:

• Teacher only;
• Equal time spent with a teacher and early childhood educator (ECE) (alternating between each at daily or half-day intervals);
• New full-time junior and senior kindergarten program offered by the Ministry of Education (a teacher and an ECE working together as a team).
